Opens November 20 | Opening Reception 6-8pm | Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center

A new event this year with local families and organizations “telling their story” with beautiful handmade decorations on crab pot trees throughout the museum gallery and education hall. Trees will feature the story of Shackleford Horses, vintage decorations from Ocracoke, memories of Portsmouth Island along with the Core Sound Quilters’ original quilted ornaments and family treasures from many of Down East communities. Jarrett Bay Boatworks, Emerald Isle Realty and other long-standing businesses will add their touches to this “sure-to-be” annual tradition. Trees will be on display through the first week of January.

Opening at 8am with hot coffee, biscuits and cinnamon rolls, our first ever Christmas Market will feature crafts from across Eastern North Carolina with gifts, decorations and handmade products. Music and storytelling throughout the day with our very own Connie Mason, Fish House Liars and others!  This will be another tradition in the making!

Core Sound Museum and Heritage Center 

The Best Weekend of the Year!

Plans for the Weekend begin November 23rd with the launch of the Core Sound Heritage Online Auction.  Register early and start the bidding at A wonderful selection of Core Sound, North Carolina and Eastern Shore working decoys from several extraordinary collections will be up for auction this season.  An online catalog will be available at by mid-November.  Henry Murphy, Ned Burgess, Cigar Daisy, Ammie Paul, Julian Hamilton are just a few of the carvings to be offered to the highest bidder.  Items will be on display at the Museum beginning Friday, December 4th at 5pm. Auction closes Saturday evening, December 5th. Proceeds go to the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum & Heritage Center. See the list of events and times below:

DECEMBER 4TH  |  Friday, 6-9pm  |  Harkers Island (inside and out)

Come Down East for a night of Christmas decorations all over the Island including the museum. Carvers, artists and crafters will be on hand outside (with lots more Christmas lights), the Gallery of Trees will be full display, the Museum Store open for business and the Carolina Decoy Collectors Display will be in place!  This will be a casual walk-through with Christmas goodies on the porch and music in the air! Free, families welcome.


DECEMBER 5th & 6th  |  Saturday-Sunday  |  Harkers Island (inside and out)

A different kind of Weekend but the same community spirit celebrating our waterfowling heritage!  Tailgating begins at 9am Saturday with carvers, collectors, artists, photographers and crafters here to help you with your Christmas shopping. The Museum Store will be open 9am to 9pm with Crab Pot Trees, Island Anchors and a new collection of Christmas and Core Sound wearables.  Waterfowl Weekend Church will be held in the parking lot at 8am Sunday Morning with sausage biscuits and cheesy grits to go!  As always, admission is free and everyone is welcome.

**During the Weekend, as with all Museum activities, all Covid-19 precautions will be in place to protect the safety of all who participate and in compliance with state and federal guidelines.

8:30-11:30 am – Breakfast with Santa, hosted by Floyds 1921 Restaurant and Catering
1:00-5:00 pm – Chowder and Cheer (Ticketed event with downtown establishments. Participating businesses and ticket sale information coming soon)
5:00-6:00 pm – Santa and Mrs. Claus with hot chocolate and Christmas music at Jaycee Park (807 Shepard Street)
5:30 pm – Flotilla on the downtown MHC waterfront
6:00 pm – Morehead City Community Tree Lighting at Katherine Davis Park (601 Arendell Street)

Downtown Countdown will bring family fun to the waterfront on New Year’s Eve. Join in the fun beginning at 5pm for activities for all ages. Enjoy watching the fire department drop the kid’s crab pot drop and children’s activities from 5pm- 6pm at Big Rock Landing. Local businesses and restaurants will provide activities and bands throughout the evening, please check individual websites for schedules. End the night at midnight with the big crab pot drop downtown and a fireworks show for all downtown to enjoy shot from Sugarloaf Island. For more information, visit
